About Douglas Blood

I am a software developer who loves to learn about new technology. There are so many things that interest me that I have no chance to learn about or pursue. I hope to be able to document some of my interests, from traveling to coding and probably some stuff that doesn’t make any sense at all.
Travel
Every two or three years I like to take an long vacation and travel. I spent a month in Europe right after I graduated high school. This was the vacation that really started my fascination and appreciation for other cultures.
In 2006, I spent three months in New Zealand. Although I initially went for the scenery, the people are really why I loved it so much. Being able to say hi to random people and not getting a dirty or confused look was an enjoyable difference.
I also enjoy shorter trips. Just spending a long weekend on the beach or visiting family and friends. They also have the benefit of being much easier to plan and pack for. I find it somewhat odd that I pack less when traveling for three months than I do for a week long trip. Having to repack everything over and over makes me want to live with less I think.
Interests
I spend a lot of time on the computer. I enjoy reading about current news and feel I can get a much broader view with more opinions online, than from traditional sources. A fair amount of time is spent developing applications, flushing out ideas and tweaking things to run smoother, faster or do just a little more. I would also like to be able to work on clean energy and providing power without having to rely on other people or infrastructure.
Sometime in my life I would also like to build a boat.  This may seem odd seeing as I have lived in the desert most of my life.  Something about manual labor helps to clear my mind and helps to collect and organize thoughts.  Tramping also does this but I hate to miss all the scenery because I was thinking about a program.
